FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK
May you all have a wonderful holiday and an even better New Year. Remember that
the world would be a better place if we all followed just one rule, Care for
others the way you would have them care for you. Everything else would fall
into place.
Bret D. Grossnickle, Mayor
UNION BRIDGE RESIDENT DEPUTY
Criminology 101 -
As the holiday season is now upon us, I thought it a good idea to write briefly
about crime prevention strategies. Broken down into simple terms, any crime
is made up of three parts: motive, ability, and opportunity. If someone wishes
to steal something out of a vehicle, then they have the motive to commit the
theft. However, if they lack the tools to break into the car, then they have
motive without ability. If they have motive and the ability, then it is up to
us to reduce the opportunity. Parking in a well-lit area and being watchful
for suspicious people or activity are excellent deterrents to crime. When this
isn't possible, then keeping valuables out of sight and locking doors and windows
will help - anything that makes committing the crime more risky or difficult.
This may be overly simplified, but I hope it will help you think of ways to
protect your home and vehicle. Have a great holiday season.

Union Bridge Fire Company
Holiday giving starts early in Union Bridge. At their Sunday breakfast
he Union Bridge Fire Company recently distributed 60 smoke alarms to families
that needed them. The Company recently decided to expand their efforts to provide
smoke detectors to residents of the Union Bridge response area. Residents of
the area are urged to call 410-775-7422 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
to get their names put on the list of those that will receive the device. You
can leave the information on the recording at extension #25. To make it easier
for families to get them the Fire Company will even deliver them to the residents'
homes. Supplies are limited and will be provided on a first call basis. Chief
Chad Green and Fire Company members believe that having smoke detectors will
greatly reduce the potential of loss of life and that a functioning detector
is one of the best investments you can make for the safety of you and your family.

HERITAGE COMMITTEE RELEASES UNION BRIDGE WALKING
TOUR BROCHURE
Union Bridge has a wealth of historic properties and vibrant history. The recent
efforts of the town, volunteers, and the business community to revitalize our
Main Street have enhanced the appearance of the town.
To promote the town as a destination, the Union Bridge Area Heritage Committee
released a brochure describing our history and extraordinary architecture. The
piece is available at locations in town and is being distributed by the Carroll
County Tourism Council to visitor centers, hotels, and shopping malls, and a
variety of sites throughout the state. The brochure was produced by members
of the Communications Subcommittee of the Main Street Revitalization Committee.
Committee member Kathy Erb wrote the text based in part on A Stroll Through
History - A Walking Tour of the Town of Union Bridge, along with additional
research. Architectural information was compiled from the Union Bridge Application
for Historic Designation prepared by Ken Short. Photographs appearing in the
brochure were taken by Elizabeth Galaida. Joan McKee of the Heritage Committee
joined Kathy Erb and Elizabeth Galaida in raising funds to cover production
costs.
The Union Bridge Area Heritage Committee would like to thank the following area
businesses and civic groups who provided financial support for the production
costs of the brochure:
New Windsor State Bank
The Town of Union Bridge
Union Bridge Lions Club
Union Bridge Business Association Members:
Buttersburg Inn
Ed's Barber Shop
Esquire Liquors
Hartzler Funeral Home
Maryland Midland Railway
Original Pizza
Union Bridge General Store
Union Bridge Pharmacy
Copies of the brochure are available at the Town Hall and at sponsoring locations
listed above. For more information, please contact Kathy Erb at 410-775-7450
