FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

Would you like to see some kind of event in town on the weekends?  If so, bring your ideas to a council meeting.  I think it would be great to have a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night event once a month during the summer.  Share your suggestions!  The first year of any event usually starts out small but with hopes to grow bigger in the years that follow.
Summer is coming and school will be out.  That brings out a lot of bike riders, so don't forget about the helmet law.  Try to help keep your family as safe as possible.
It's time to think back about 15 to 20 years ago, it was talked about in schools everywhere "HEROIN KILLS".  Well, it's back. Everyday loved ones, young and old , are dying for that big high.  It's not fun and games.  Teens think it is cool or they are going along with the crowd, but it is not cool or the "in" thing to do.  This drug leaves many families in mourning.  You could even take a life.  If the EMS people are handling a drug overdose and someone else is having a heart attack, stroke or are involved in a serious car accident and they can't respond because you choose to use this drug.  EMS could be saving a life of someone who wants to live.  The drug dealers are getting brave.   They don't even try to hide the fact that they are selling drugs.  Your days are numbered.  If you are not happy living in Union Bridge, then leave.  Union Bridge has always been a great place to live and raise a family and it will continue to be.  We will not let the drug dealers take over.
Union Bridge will be having another Drug Expo on October 6, 2016 held at the fire hall.  Please plan to attend.

Perry L. Jones, Jr., Mayor

HOUSE NUMBERS
Emergency response teams cannot find you if your house number is not clearly displayed on your home.  Believe it or not, a majority are not visible from the street.  It's even worse at night.  A badly displayed number or no number at all can cost you precious time in an emergency.  If you have not already done so, please place your house number on your home.  The bigger the numbers the better.  Help us to be able to locate you when you need our assistance.

OUTDOOR WATER CONSERVATION TIPS
1. Water your yard and outdoor plants early or late in the day to reduce evaporation.
2. Mulch around plants to hold water in the soil.
3. Use a shut-off nozzle on your hose.
4. Use plants that require less water.
5. Use a broom, not a hose to clean driveways and walkways.
6. Avoid leaving sprinklers or hoses unattended. A garden hose can pour out 600 gallons or more in only a few hours.
7. Collect rainwater to reuse in the garden whenever possible.
8. Use leftover water from cooking pasta or vegetables to water indoor/outdoor plants.
9. Limit car washing or visit a commercial car wash that recycles water.
10. Keep outside faucets in good repair.

If anyone notices anyone stealing water from hydrants or any unauthorized appropriation of water, please call the Town Hall at 401-775-2711.

DISPOSABLE DOES NOT MEAN FLUSHABLE
The sewer system is designed to accept water, human waste and toilet paper.  Toilet paper dissolves quickly in water.  However disposable cleaning wipes, diapers, paper towels, shop rags and other such items do not dissolve easily and may accumulate in the sewer system contributing to clogs and back-ups.  As these items travel through the system they also get caught in the pumps and other equipment potentially damaging the equipment and leading to an overflow.  Even if the label reads "flushable" it is still safer to dispose of these items in the trash.

SEWER LINE BLOCKAGES
RESIDENTS: If your sewer line becomes blocked please contact the Town Hall at 410-775-2711 before calling a plumber.
