FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

Summer is almost over and school will soon be back in session.   Please allow extra time for your travel to and from work, due to the school bus stops.  There will be more children out during our morning commute, so please be cautious and help keep our children safe this school year.

The Town of Union Bridge’s request for FY12 Community Development Block Grant fund has been approved in the amount of $230,000.  These funds will be used for infrastructure improvements along West Broadway.  A Public hearing will be held in the near future to discuss the type of repairs that will be taking place.  I would like to encourage everyone to attend this hearing.

It has been brought to my attention that certain properties in Union Bridge have had a lot of police activity.  The landlords of these particular properties need to step in and inform their tenants, that there are laws (that can be put into place) for repeated police calls to a certain address, under which fines could be issued, and that, - that type of behavior from their tenants will not be tolerated.  When we have residents who are a consistent problem to our police force, it reflects badly on the town and on the landlords.

At our June work session I requested the council to make a list of things they would like to see accomplished in The Town of Union Bridge.  At our September 26, 2011 council meeting we will be discussing our future goals for the town.  Please plan to attend this meeting.  This is the opportunity for you, the residents of Union Bridge, to tell the Mayor and Council what you would like to see the town accomplish.  It is time for us to work together as a unified community.

Perry L. Jones, Jr., Mayor

FAITH WEAVER FRIENDS CLUB
The Union Bridge Church of the Brethren has a special Tuesday evening program for kids in grades K-6.  It is called “Faith Weaver Friends Club”.  Games, crafts, snacks, music, and faith lessons are all part of each energy-packed session.  Faith Weaver Friends Club is fun and it’s free.  Also children will get a lot more than fun out of Faith Weaver Friends Club.  Working on their weekly journal will reinforce language and writing skills they are learning in school.  Group activities will develop important social skills.

Our tenth year of this program begins September 13 to November 1, and another eight -week session will be held January 17 - March 6.  The evenings begin at 6 p.m. and end at  7:30 p.m.  We can also help with transportation.

To get your child involved contact the Church of the Brethren at 124 S. Main Street, Box 518, Union Bridge or call Pastor Jim at 410-775-2717

RECYCLING
The Town of Union Bridge is requesting that all residents of Union Bridge make an effort to recycle everything they possibly can.  The cost for trash that is picked up in town is a combination of the cost for the pick-up of the trash plus the tipping fee at the landfill.  When you recycle, the town pays only for the pick-up service, there is no tipping fee associated with recyclables.  Therefore, the more that we recycle, the less it costs the town.  There is information at the Town Hall and at the County Office Building explaining what you can put in your recycle bins.  Everything that is recyclable can be put into the same  container, as Carroll County  is doing single- stream recycling.
