FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

Summer came and went very fast.  Grass grew a lot this summer.  Soon the leaves will be falling.  We are still looking for young people who are willing to be added to a list at the town office to help with leaf clean-up.  We often get calls from residents who need help.

The town will be holding meetings with community organizations about what is called Sustainable Community Designation.  This is something new we must do to be eligible for grants starting in 2014.  Letters will be sent out to all entities.  Please take the time and get involved.  Grants are very helpful with projects, now and in the future of Union Bridge.  Millions of dollars are out there, but it takes a lot of investigating to find the grants and a lot of paper work to apply for the grants.  Projects like street repairs, water and sewer projects are a large part of what grants can be used for.

We are still getting calls about unruly scooter, and skateboarders.  This does not help when these young people ask for skate parks and such.  Some parents say not my child.  Take time and look into Facebook, you will see who they are.  They are seen riding and jumping off of porches that are private property.  Please show respect to others.

Perry L. Jones, Jr., Mayor

GRANT PROJECTS UPDATE
CDBG West Broadway Reconstruction Phase Two Application-
The town was awarded a $138,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for phase two to the West Broadway Street project. Phase two will include work from Whyte Street to the dead-end. Construction is planned to start soon.

Wetlands Park Trail Extension
The Town of Union Bridge completed grant applications to Maryland’s Program Open Space, Community Parks and Playgrounds, and the National Recreational Trail Association. These applications are for the planned final phase to the multi-phase trial system in the town’s Wetlands Park located off of Rt. 75. Once complete, the trial will “loop” around the park for a distance of approximately one mile.

For questions on these or any other projects, please call the Town Office at 410-775-2711.
